Summerwood
Veterinary Clinic Services
Wellness Care: Summerwood Veterinary
Clinic believes in the importance of preventing disease. Vaccinations
and wellness screenings such as Heartworm tests, fecal exams,
and Felv/FIV tests for dogs and cats are very important. Yearly
exams are emphasized to note any changes from the previous
year. It is true that pets age faster than people, so
a year’s time can sometimes equal seven years in a pet’s
aging. As pets enter their senior years, twice yearly
exams may be recommended. We recommend all pets be on
heartworm prevention every month. Fleas are also a
health issue where we live, so we have many options for flea
and tick prevention.
Surgical Services/ Dentistry: We perform
many surgical procedures at Summerwood Veterinary Clinic. A
short list of procedures offered are: spays and neuters, declaws,
tumor removals and lumpectomies, biopsies, bladder surgeries,
wound repairs, fracture repairs (depending on site and severity),
amputations, hematoma repairs, hernia repairs, etc. If
your pet is in need of a surgical procedure, please call the
clinic and we will discuss the procedure with you and give
you an estimate. We believe in pain management during
and after the procedure. We perform dental cleanings,
extractions if needed, and certain oral surgeries. All
surgery and dental patients are closely monitored while under
anesthesia using EKG’s, pulse oximetry, blood pressure,
etc. We perform preanesthetic blood work. We strive to
use safe anesthetic protocols. If you have any concerns
regarding anesthesia, or if your pet has had problems in the
past while under anesthesia, please inform us so we can discuss
these issues with you.
Prescription Diets/Nutritional Counseling: Just
as important as vaccinations, proper nutrition can help prevent
a host of diseases. Over the last several decades, many
improvements have been made in the nutritional science of pet
foods. Stage of life diets (puppy/kitten, adult, and
senior diets) as well as diets designed for special health
conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, food allergies,
arthritis, etc.) have been developed that increase the quality
of life for our pets. If your pet has special nutritional
needs, we would love the opportunity to discuss them with you.
Internal Medicine: Pets can suffer
from many internal medical problems similar to people. Such
diseases include diabetes, hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism,
adrenal diseases, autoimmune diseases, kidney disease, liver
disease, etc. Many of these problems need blood tests,
urine tests, radiographs, etc. to diagnose. Summerwood
Veterinary Clinic has both in-house and outside laboratory
capabilities. We can discuss your pet’s symptoms
and test results on an individual basis. We have access
to many specialists in town if your pet requires additional
specialty tests to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Microchip Identification: Unfortunately,
despite our best efforts, sometimes our pets become separated
from us. Whether they escape through a hole in the fence
or run out the front door when a friend comes to visit, it
can be a heart wrenching experience when they are missing. Collars
and tags can come off. Microchipping is one more way
to help insure your pet will come back to you. We use
Home Again Microchips. They are very small (about the
size of a grain of rice) and are implanted in between the shoulder
blades. They can be implanted when the pet is awake or
under anesthesia, for instance, during a spay or neuter procedure. The
chips have an individual encrypted number unique to your pet. If
your pet is missing and ends up at a shelter or veterinary
clinic, the pet should be scanned for a microchip. If
one is found, the number can be looked up by calling or going
on line to the Home Again website. Your pet can then
be reunited to you by the information you provide. Summerwood
Veterinary clinic can also be contacted, so we may be able
to contact you as well. Once you notify Home Again
that your pet is missing, a “Lost” notice
will go out to all clinics, shelters, and individuals listed
on the Home Again Website within 25 miles. Therefore,
nearby people will also be looking out for your lost pet. There
are additional benefits with Home Again Microchips. If
you have any questions about microchipping, please call Summerwood
Veterinary Clinic or go to the Home Again Website.
Geriatric and Arthritic Care: Pets
are living longer. That’s a good thing. At
Summerwood Veterinary Clinic old age is not considered a disease,
but as with people, aging pets may suffer from arthritis, decreased
vision and hearing, or other age related changes. Fortunately,
we have many ways to help our aging friends. Many products
have become available to help with arthritis. If your
pet is slowing down, appearing “stiffer” on rising,
or just not able to run or exercise like they used to do, please
call us. We would like to help.
Bathing/Inside Boarding: All
our boarding at Summerwood Veterinary Clinic is inside. We cater to
pets with special needs or medications that may not be addressed
at regular boarding facilities. We strive to make your
pet as comfortable as possible while you are away. Feel
free to bring any special toy or food that they may enjoy. We
also offer bath services for your pets. Nail trims, anal
gland expressions and ear cleanings are included with a bath. We
can also provide flea prevention at bath time if needed. We
also offer nail dremmeling and “Furminator” treatments. We
like our client’s pets to feel good and look good, too!
Cancer Treatments and Therapies: Dr.
McCann has a special interest in cancer treatment and therapies. She
has had many of her own pets develop cancer over the years
and knows first hand the emotions from diagnosis, treatment
decisions, and quality of life aspects of cancer therapy. She
believes cancer should be treated like other diseases and that
cures can happen. Each family should be as well informed
about their pet’s conditions and treatment options as
possible. Summerwood Veterinary Clinic has chemotherapy
capabilities. If you are concerned about cancer or your
pet has recently been diagnosed and you have questions, please
call to discuss your pet’s individual case.
Dermatology and Allergy Treatments: Pets
can have many skin issues. Unfortunately, allergies
in pets are often exhibited in their skin. If your pet
is itching more often than they should, or you notice anything
unusual about your pet’s skin, please call to set up
a consultation and examination. Allergies are as common
in pets as they are in people in the Gulf Coast environment. We
would love to help with any of your pet’s skin issues. We
also offer an extensive line of flea products.
House Calls
House Calls may be scheduled, when possible, to provide additional
comfort to ailing or immobile pets when the euthanasia decision
has been made. Please call the clinic to set up such an appointment
if needed. |
